Comments: Douglas DC-3-314A N28AA (msn 2239) now has Candler Field Express titles. The vintage airliner is pictured at Griffin, GA (Spalding County) in January 2010. Candler Field is a historic name in Georgia. The world's busiest airport, Atlanta's Hartsfield–Jackson International Airport, began with a five-year, rent free lease on 287 acres that had been an abandoned auto racetrack. The lease was signed on April 16, 1925 by Atlanta Mayor Walter Sims, to develop it into an airfield. As part of the deal, the field was renamed Candler Field after its former owner, Coca-Cola founder and former Atlanta mayor Asa Candler. The first flight into Candler Field was on September 15, 1926 with a Florida Airways (1st) mail plane from Jacksonville. The ex-Braniff machine is now owned by Ron Alexander of Griffin. Captain Alexander is building a replica of Candler Field in Williamson just south of Griffin. He has already built one hanger and a museum on the site, hence the titles. Copyright Photo: Norbert G.
